Twitter: Beyond the hashtags

It is one of the biggest players in the breaking news business – yet it does not have any reporters, editors, a printing press or a scheduled news broadcast.

Tech giant Twitter has emerged as main rival to leading newspaper websites despite its posts being limited to 140-characters.

Changing the way breaking news is reported, Twitter’s trending hashtags and tweets from a live location have played a huge role in spreading news of protests and government crackdowns.

Leaving traditional media in the dust, the micro-blogging platform has hired its own head of news and developed new software to increase on its 300 million active users.
